The 10th edition of the Lamu Cultural Festival was a fusion of old and new, ranging from traditional displays and dances to Bollywood music and hip hop by local artistes.

Popular events at the festival included donkey competitions and dhow races.

The four-day festival, billed as a celebration of age-old Swahili traditions, ended on November 28 against the backdrop of a report by Unesco and the World Heritage Committee critical of recent developments at the World Heritage Site.

The report by the Unesco/WHC Reactive Monitoring Mission to Lamu Old Town raised concern over several issues after an on-site visit by experts in May.

The experts held meetings with the public, Lamu leaders and officials from the Ministry of State for Natural Heritage, the County Council of Lamu and the National Museums of Kenya.

Among the concerns highlighted are the changes in architecture of the Old Town.

Architecture was one of the main criteria on which the town was made a World Heritage Centre.

Ngulia safari lodge is located in Tsavo West National Park on the edge of the Ndawe Escarpment with panoramic views of the Sweeping plains.

Flights to Somalia the charterer will have to give a letter on the firm letterhead to the carrier with details of flight, departure date, names and nationality of the passengers or nature of cargo and purpose for the flight which the carrier will attach on the request letter to Ministry of Foreign Affairs Kenya for clearance issuance and the flight will not take off until an official communication has been received which is copied to Control Tower, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and Kenya Airports Authority. Flights to South Sudan you will be required to give 2 working days notice for obtaining the passes and you will have to take original passport,2 copies passport size photos for every passenger and you will be issued with one to three month passes or 1 to 6 month which you should renew on expiry and on arrival South Sudan you will pay visa fee of usd 100=00 per person for one month.

Travelling by air in Kenya doesn’t mean spending a lot of money anymore as the low cost Kenya domestic flights make it possible for the passengers to travel to any part of the country. The new airlines have introduced cheap domestic tickets so that people can forget about the boring train and bus journey and use Kenya domestic flights for their journey.

Getting Around by Air

Kenya Airways operates scheduled services to Kisumu (on the shore of Lake Victoria), Lamu, Malindi and Mombasa.

Air Kenya offers scheduled flights from Nairobi to Amboseli, Lamu, Malindi, Masai Mara, Mombasa, Lewa, Nanyuki, Meru, Samburu and Kilimanjaro (in Tanzania).

However, men can still be seen to wear the full length robes known as khanzus with kofia caps while women cover themselves in the black wraparound cloth common in other Islamic cultures.
